History of Spruce Point
In the summer of 2009, Spurwink Services launched Spruce Point Maine, an independent residential service for adults with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other developmental delays. The concept of creating options for independent living for adults with disabilities was developed through intensive research and analysis on existing housing options, knowledge of creating low sensory environments, and most importantly based on experience of managing a variety of residential staffing models that offer safe environments rich with social opportunities that enhance social skills and build confidence.
Spruce Point is unique among other residential programs offered to adults with disabilities. The vision for Spruce Point is driven by the potential to offer adults autism, Asperger’s Disorder and other developmental delays a home where they can age in place, a living space that they can call their own, and a residential life where they can continue to receive supports that encourage personal growth and the building of new skills.
Spruce Point Maine capitalizes on Spurwink Services 50 year’s experience of providing educational and therapeutic residential programs for both children and adults. Spurwink provides homes in small, community settings throughout the state of Maine. The houses are also not readily identifiable as Spruce Point or Spurwink on the outside. Privacy is of great importance.
Families and their adult children now have more choices about choosing a home, their living arrangements and their residential life. Spruce Point makes it possible to tailor the living arrangements to meet the needs and desires of the adult family member. New housing options and live-in supports with experience are the next generation housing choices to transform and enrich residential life of adults with disabilities.
A team of social workers, consulting psychologist and psychiatrists, therapeutic couples and trained staff and other therapist inspire and drive our work forward to serve adults with disabilities and their families.
